Stigma Campaign
NAMI-WCI attacks the Stigma of Mental Illness
Every day more than 500 of our neighbors endure serious mental illness alone and without professional treatment. Stigma fosters denial of symptoms and pushes us away from treatment.
NAMI-WCI's Campaign to Eliminate the Stigma of Mental Illness is attacking these destructive myths with a carefully planned media campaign, educational programs in the schools, an anti-stigma website, high profile public events and ongoing presentations to service clubs and organizations.
Weapons against Stigma:
- A multimedia publicity campaign: public service announcements on both television and radio, advertisements in the newspapers, signs on city buses
- "In our own voice": consumers speak to the community
- Breaking the Silence: an anti stigma curriculum for elementary, middle and high school students
- The Mental Health Players: Consumers, family members and professional actors act out scenarios - provoke discussion of stigma.
- A Campaign Website: fighting stigma on the internet.
- A Mental Health Education Conference for Clergy: reaching out and seeking the support of congregations.
