The President's Corner

President's PhotoAfter three years on the Board of Directors for NAMI-WCI, I am looking forward to serving as President for the next 2 years. I came to NAMI-WCI 6 years ago looking for information and support to help me cope with and support my daughter who was in crisis, She was eventually diagnosed as having bipolar disorder. I took the Journey of Hope class (now Family to Family). I attended support groups to learn as much as I could. So many others who had been through similar circumstances were willing to give of their time and understanding.

With the help and support of members and friends, NAMI-WCI continues to provide education and support for the family and friends of those struggling with serious mental illness. NAMI-WCI is working hard to educate the community to help eliminate the stigma associated with mental illness. You can help! Take the time to read all about what is happening in the newsletter or here online. There are many opportunities to become involved.

As a Community, we still have much work to do in order to have effective treatment options available to those in our midst who are affected by these serious diseases. Mental Illness is biologically based. Mental Illness can be treated. Lives can be restored. We must continue to advocate for the availability of good mental health services for all members of our community whenever they are needed. The temporary closing of the Psychiatric Unit at Home Hospital has increased the awareness of critical services. Now is the time! Speak up! Make sure our friends, family and neighbors are able to access the services they so desperately need. Keep informed and involved-you can make a difference.

In April NAMI-WCI will be participating in Homeward Bound-a walk to help support those who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. Please consider walking or supporting those who are walking in support of NAMI-WCI. This is a great opportunity to talk to friends, co-workers and acquaintances about what services we can provide and what is needed in our community. Better yet---Get a team together, and come Walk With Us!!

See You There!
--- Terrie Parr
