Awards Presented by NAMI-WCI
The Patricia Wheaton Consumer Award
The Director of NAMI-WCI's Peer-to-Peer Program, Julia Kauffman, wins statewide consumer award! Julia is this year's recipient of the 2006 "Patricia Wheaton Consumer Award." The honor was presented at NAMI-Indiana's Annual Conference in Indianapolis. The Wheaton award is given annually "In recognition of an individual who, despite living with mental illness, displays exemplary courage not only in staying the course to recovery but also in educating and helping others to understand and to overcome." For Julia, this is a well earned and eminently deserved award. Congratulations, Julia!
The Cecilia Weber Advocacy Awards
The Weber Award is presented by NAMI-WCI annually to the individual or individuals who have, through their community efforts, significantly improved the life circumstances of the seriously mentally ill and their families. NAMI-WCI presented awards to two recipients this year at our Annual Banquet.

The Chico Hatke - Crisis Intervention Officer of the Year Award
NAMI-WCI presents the Crisis Intervention Team Officer, annually, who has shown outstanding skill and dedication in assisting members of our community who are in psychiatric crisis. The award was presented at the Annual Banquet this past November:

NAMI-WCI designated as a finalist for Purdue award
The Purdue College of Consumer and Family Sciences has designated NAMI-WCI one of 3 statewide finalists for it's 2005:
"Inspiring Families and Building Communities Award."
In his letter announcing the award, Dennis A. Savanio, Dean of the College of Consumer and Family Sciences said;
"Congratulations to the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill-West Central Indiana on being chosen a finalist for the Inspiring Families and Building Communities Award. You were chosen for having made outstanding contributions to the families and communities in Indiana."
NAMI-WCI Executive Director wins George Award
Dr.
William G. LeFurgy, the NAMI-WCI Executive Director, received the 2005 "George
Award" from The Journal & Courier newspaper for his
work in bringing the Crisis Intervention Team to greater Lafayette.
In 2002, as a program consultant to NAMI-WCI, Bill helped secure a Community Action Grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration for $133,000 for the planning and implementation of training police officers how to respond to individuals in psychiatric crisis. Lieutenant Chico Hatke of the Lafayette Police Department said;
"CIT comes into play almost daily. It has saved our community thousands of dollars by getting people appropriate treatment rather than incarceration."
Bill LeFurgy's other volunteer activities include; serving on the Board of the Civic Theater, President of the Wabash Area Lifetime Learning Association and President of the Tippecanoe Council of Aging.
